Child Psychotherapy
Dr. Jacobs' psychotherapy approach with children and adolescents is child-centered within a family context. She incorporates play and talk therapy, creative arts, hypnotherapy and cognitive behavioral techniques. Dr. Jacobs helps children and adolescents safely express themselves and better understand their behavior, build on their strengths and develop adaptive coping skills. She believes psychotherapy for children and adolescents can improve their self-esteem, relieve symptoms resulting from stress and prevent future emotional or social difficulties. Psychotherapy can also help them to interact more positively at school and home.

Treatment issues may include low self-esteem, social difficulties, learning disabilities or lack of school motivation, anxiety disorders (separation anxiety and phobias), depression, aggressive behavior, poor frustration tolerance and regulation of emotions, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and attention deficit disorder (ADD).

Dr. Jacobs has extensive experience in pediatric oncology and bereavement. She effectively deals with children who have adjustment difficulties resulting from a loss or traumatic event, such as an illness or death of a family member or separation and divorce. Dr. Jacobs also uses hypnotherapy and relaxation techniques to help children manage their anxiety of medical procedures and other fearful situations. Click here to schedule an appointment.

She has the ability to connect and engage well with tweens and adolescents providing a positive and safe therapeutic environment. She integrates psycho-education into the therapeutic relationship to help teenagers make responsible and safe choices regarding sex, alcohol and drugs. She also works with adolescents preparing for the transition from high school to college.

Dr. Jacobs works closely with parents whose child or adolescent is in therapy. This critical component of treatment allows parents to stay informed of their child’s progress. As parents are an integral part of their child’s success in therapy. Dr. Jacobs will tailor the treatment goals and approach to the individual’s needs.

If needed, Dr. Jacobs will collaborate with other professionals working with the child or adolescent in order to provide coordinated care. When necessary, Dr. Jacobs will make appropriate referrals to other professionals such as; psychiatrists, occupational and speech therapists and neuropsychologists for educational evaluations.

Dr. Jacobs meets with parents for an initial consultation to determine whether their child or adolescent could benefit from psychotherapy with parent guidance or parent guidance alone. Click here to schedule an appointment.
